Ted is the head coach and trainer for Saratoga’s U12 boys teams. Over the past ten years Ted has coached various age groups of youth soccer players at Saratoga Wilton Soccer Club and Littleton Soccer Club in Littleton, Colorado. Ted has been head coach and trainer of Saratoga’s U12 teams for the past several years. He holds an ‘E’ coaching license as well as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America state coaching diploma. Ted was a four-year starter for Siena College’s NCAA soccer team after being a Central Oneida League first team all-star playing center mid-field for New Hartford High School. Ted has been playing soccer since childhood, and still plays competitively today…….but at a much slower pace!
My primary focus at the U12 level is on player development. So, my coaching philosophy at the younger age groups is to provide players a challenging but fun environment in which they can develop solid technical skills; a willingness to handle the ball and play with confidence and creativity; an awareness of how to play an organized game of soccer; and a love of the game. Important decision-making concepts of tactical play are also emphasized to help prepare players for the next level. To accomplish this we provide players with lots of touches on the soccer ball through skills work and playing various short-sided games, amongst other training techniques. We try to make every training activity fun and challenging as part of a progression throughout a season. Sports can provide an excellent environment for kids to learn many valuable things such as the importance of hard work, teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship, etc, and we certainly try to make the most of those opportunities throughout our soccer season.
Favorite Soccer Memory
What I think of most about my playing and coaching background are the teammates I have had, and players I have coached, over the years. I have been very fortunate to participate in soccer with many fine individuals over the years. Spending so much time playing a sport we all love, sometimes in favorable conditions and other times in challenging situations, allows strong bonds to be formed. Although I recall many team and individual accomplishments (and set-backs), what I think back on most are teammates and many soccer playing experiences we shared.
Favorite Soccer Team, Coach or Player
I like my U12 boys teams the most! Beyond that, I favor the US Men’s and Women’s National Teams and enjoy watching European club soccer games when I can.
Just for Fun
Ted has three kids who are active with sports, including lacrosse, baseball, hockey, equestrian and soccer, and other activities. Ted says he doesn’t have much free time beyond his kids’ activities and coaching, but he also enjoys spending time with his family doing various outdoor activities and just relaxing. Ted was also a varsity baseball player in high school. Few people know that Ted appeared regularly on a children’s TV show many years ago as a youngster living in Washington DC.
